Synopsis: A fanciful speculation on the inspiration behind Dutch painter Jan Vermeer's greatest painting - The Girl with a Pearl Earring. Also known as The Mona Lisa of the North, this intriguing work of a young woman with hair wrapped with a blue turban and wearing a pearl earring has mystified it's admirer's for centuries.
The film begins with the young Greet gaining employment as a servant in Vermeer's household. The introverted painter takes a special interest in her as he discovers that she possesses an artist's ability to perceive beauty in the subtle nuances of light and color. However, Vermeer's wife begins to eye Greet with a jealous heart as her husband grows closer to the young maid. Emotional tension and longing develop as Greet becomes the subject of the painter's latest work. Then the masterwork is finally revealed - to most it is a glory, but to Vermeer's wife it is nothing less than a horrible betrayal.
