Synopsis: This sumptuous custome drama, set in the Paris of the mid 19th century, centers around the lonely seamstress Bette (Jessica Lange), who attempts to ingratiate herself into the aristocratic family of her deceased sister. Unsuccessful, she then discovers and succors a handsome but starving sculptor. He spurns her love and instead finds romance in the arms of another woman, who happens to be a member of her late sister's snobbish family.
Cousin Bette, with help from the lusty actress Jenny Cadine (Elisabeth Shue), plots revenge and wreaks destruction and anguish upon those that have scorned her. A smart and comical film adaptation of one of the classic novels making up Honore de Balzac's eponymous La Comedie Humaine.
